Brainspotting -via Zoom
‘Where you look affects how you feel’ ~ Dr. David Grand
Brainspotting was created by David Grant in 2003 and has proven to be a highly effective and powerful, somatic mind/body therapy that helps people to heal from trauma, PTSD, anxiety and depression. It works by using eye movement and bilateral sounds to help a client locate where the trauma is held in their body so they can process it and move on with their life. Studies have shown that it is more effective than EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) as it is more flexible and achieves quicker results. Three to six sessions are recommended to fully benefit from the process.
What happens during a session?
At the beginning of your session, I will ask you what issue you would like to focus on. It could be something traumatic from your past, an uncomfortable feeling that you can’t find the origins of and are unable to shift, a challenging experience that still leaves you with painful feelings or a pattern of destructive behaviour.
I will then ask you to put on the headphones so you can listen to bilateral sounds (or you can use your own headphones if we are working together or via Zoom, in this case, I will send you the music). The purpose of listening to bilateral sounds during your Brainspotting process is to balance the left and right brain hemispheres and create a sense of calm as you access feelings and memories. *The music is not essential, so if you prefer not to listen that is totally fine but it does help to heighten your experience.
To find the ‘brainspot’ I will ask you to feel into your issue as you follow a pointing pen with your eyes across a horizontal and then a vertical axis until you tell me where the sensation in your body is strongest. This is to locate an eye position or ‘brainspot’ that holds emotional resonance related to your issue or traumatic memory. I will ask you to keep your focus on this spot (by using the end of my pointer) with focused and mindful attention, so the memories and difficult feelings that you are dealing with can be brought to the surface and neutralised.
Your internal & physical observations and my attunement with you will safely hold you in this space for as long as you need to allow your internal healing to work through the process. Sometimes this can take a long time (I will gently bring the session to a close if we go past 50 minutes.)
Some clients find they want to remain silent throughout their session and just allow the processing to happen. I will check in with you from time to time, otherwise, I will also remain silent. Others feel the need to talk throughout or/and move their bodies through the process. There is no right or wrong way of experiencing Brainspotting. Your body will tell you what you need to heal and I will safely and gently hold this space to allow you to move through it in your own time.
After a session, you may feel very tired so I will complete your session with a short grounding meditation and invite you to drink a glass of water. The Brainspotting process often continues to integrate and heal you in the days and weeks after your session. I will follow up a few days later to see how you are feeling and organise another session if you wish to.
*I offer a discount if you buy a 4-session package
Brainspotting testimonials…
‘I had no idea what to expect from my session via Zoom but Sofie immediately put me at ease. I found it very interesting how my body responded differently as the pointer moved across my vision. I felt quite emotional at times but just allowed myself to cry. Funnily enough I didn’t want to look away from the ‘spot’ until I was ready. Sofie was very connected to what I was going through and I hardly knew she was there. I really liked the music too it definitely added another dimension to the process. I am still a bit confused about how it all works but I definitely don’t feel the same way as I did before my session. I feel much, much lighter and would definitely do it again.’ ~ Libby, London
‘I have been working with Sofie for a while now using different healing methods to help me get over a difficult birth experience but brainspotting is my favourite. It is very non-invasive, there is very little talking, only what you want to say. Sofie just helped me to go inward so I could heal myself. If you have tried everything else but been disapointed with the results then give this a go… what have you got to lose?’ ~ Rachel, Brighton
