The benefits of perineal massage & how to do it

Perineal massage is a technique that involves the stretching and massaging of the perineum, which is the area between the vagina and the anus. This practice is often recommended during pregnancy to help prepare the perineum for the stretching that occurs during childbirth.

The best way to do the massage is when you are feeling relaxed, after a bath or just before bed. Ensure your hands are clean and your nails are cut short. Use a gentle perineum or vegetable oil and insert 2 fingers a short way into the vagina. Gently move your fingers in a downward U motion or from 3, 6, and 9 O’clock. Practice deep, relaxing breathing as you do this. It is recommended you do this massage from 26 weeks pregnant, building up from 1 to 5 minutes a day until birth-day arrives.

Here are some of the benefits of perineal massage:

1. Reduced risk of tearing: Perineal massage has been shown to reduce the risk of tearing during childbirth, especially in first-time mothers. The massage helps to increase the elasticity and flexibility of the perineal tissues, which can make them less likely to tear during delivery.

2. Improved recovery: By preparing the perineal tissues for birth, perineal massage can also help to speed up the healing process after delivery. Women who have practised perineal massage during pregnancy often report less pain and discomfort in the perineal area after giving birth.

3. Increased comfort during childbirth: Perineal massage can help to reduce pain and discomfort during childbirth by preparing the perineum for the stretching that occurs during delivery. This can help women to feel more in control and relaxed during the birthing process.

4. Improved sexual function: By increasing the elasticity and flexibility of the perineal tissues, perineal massage can also help to improve sexual function after childbirth. Women who have practised perineal massage during pregnancy may experience less pain and discomfort during sex and may be able to enjoy a more satisfying sexual experience.

It's important to note that perineal massage should only be practiced after consulting with a healthcare provider, and should be done carefully and gently to avoid causing any injury or discomfort.
